With the inaugural Fringe World Festival drawn to a close on the weekend (19 February), organisers Artrage are perched to unleash this new project which will run until late April 2012.

Seven stories up, it will provide for panoramic views of the Perth city skyline and will comfortably seat 250 patrons screening films every night of the week.

“This is an exciting new cinema experience for Perth and, considering we have some of the best summer nights in Australia, it’s long overdue,” says Artrage director Marcus Canning.

“This rooftop is one of Perth’s best kept secrets. Artrage used this space ten years ago for a festival performance work and we’ve always wanted to set up the space for a cinema. We’ll be decking it out like a Summer oasis,” Canning says.

In keeping with the kitsch ambience of Fringe World’s Treasury Building on St George’s Terrace, the entire rooftop will be covered with faux lawn and scattered with palm trees. There will be a sea of black and white striped deck chairs and hundreds of pink flamingos as well as a vintage caravan projection booth. The cinema screen itself will be attached to a double sea container.

“The Roe Street Car Park has pedestrian access straight off James Street at the Piazza and two elevators going straight up to the roof, one of which will be dedicated to Rooftop Movies audiences. It also has vehicle access straight off Roe Street so people can drive in, park their cars for the night, pop out for a bite to eat on James Street and take the elevator to the roof to catch a film,” Canning says.

The film program includes classic and cult movies, recent releases as well as nightly pre and post screening entertainments, including ongoing weekly special events:

* Bulmers Belly Laugh Wednesdays
o Featuring live comedy pre and post feature film
* Friday & Saturday Double Feature
o A specially selected programmed duo of films over the weekend nights
* Stella Summer Classics
o Featuring live Jazz pre and post feature film to screening a cinema classic

All films screen one night only and a taste of the first months program includes: Casablanca, Dr Strangelove, The Big Lebowski, Sin City, Spirited Away and Revenge of the Nerds.

The partnership with City of Perth Parking allows patrons to combine the cost of parking and the cost of the movie into one ticket.

Tickets are $10 (film only) or $18 including parking within the Roe Street complex.

Tickets for Friday & Saturday Double Features are $15 (film only) or $23 inclusive of parking. Booking fees apply.

The pilot program kicks off with a special VIP Opening Night on Wednesday 29 February.

Check out the program here

For more information on the program head to http://www.rooftopmovies.com.au.

Most actors have a niche, Rom-Com, Action, Drama. For Wahlberg it’s that nice guy at heart doing bad things to save others.

Chris Farraday (Mark Wahlberg) left this life of Crime long ago but after his brother-in-law Andy (Caleb Landry Jones), cocks-up a drug deal, Chris is forced back into doing what he does best- running contraband-to settle Andy’s debt.

Know around the traps as smuggler extraordinaire, just like that, for the cause, he’s back in the Game. Throwing together a motley crew of smugglers and fellow crims, getting himself on a ship’s crew list before popping over to Panama where everyone from his past seems more than happy to help him out. How convenient.

The aim – bring back the goods, save Andy, keep his tattooed boss Briggs happy and live happily ever after.

Now of course things go remarkably wrong and chaos ensures but don’t panic, Farraday takes it all in his stride.

The plot is questionable and doesn’t particularly go anywhere, but a few clever twists make it worthwhile. It’s fast paced and constantly moving and doesn’t bore easily. Walhberg is lovely to look at, Beckinsdale is rather boring but to be fair, doesn’t do much but seem worried the entire film

Worth seeing with friends for a night out, but probably won’t stay on the shelves at Video Ezy too long.

3/5

This is a straight up, big room sound from Melbourne producers Andy Murphy & DJ Jorj and this time the guys have teamed up with vocalist and Commander-in-chief Seany B (feat vocalist on TV Rock’s breakthrough track Flaunt it) to expertly lead the battle chant on the mic, ensuring sweat and dancefloor devotion. Remixes come courtesy of: Tradelove from Italy, Bombs Away, J-Trick and Helena.

When you’ve lived in a city for a while, it’s easy to be complacent, take it for granted and think nothing goes on. Thanks to the release of a compact new guide – Hide & Seek Perth – you’ll see our city in a whole different light.

From unique restaurants and shops to alleyway bars and quirky activities, this funky guidebook features 40 secret and intriguing places that you won’t find in any regular travel guide. Better yet, none of them will burn a hole in your wallet.

Consider it your map to the places you wouldn’t otherwise discover, the ones people usually trip over or find only by word-of-mouth. Whether you’re new and visiting Perth or have been here all your life, this is your ticket to the most unusual and fun places and activities that will make you fall in love with the city all over again and remember why you live here.

Hide & Seek Perth is written by well-known and in-the-know local culture vultures Sarah McNeill, Julian Tompkin, Max Veenhuyzen and Emma Bergmeier. Each of the 40 selected places is featured over a doublepage spread with a review, images and a handy locator map.

The book is divided into four sections:
• Hit the Streets – Places to see and things to do include making a rock’n’roll pilgrimage or getting a
great haircut in a fabulous setting.
• Treasure Trove – You’ll give up shopping in barns and never again be one of the sheep after
discovering the best local labels and stores. One of them is even run by a pretty famous dude.
• Feeling Peckish? – Eleven ways to fill your tummy with yummy food and sometimes a view to kill
for.
• Night Owl – Mingle, dance and groove the night away in bars, clubs and live-music venues. There’s
even one you have to enter via an old telephone box.

Blank pages at the back of the book leave space to record your own Perth discoveries and the compact format (140mm x 140mm) make this book easy to take with you.

The Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane editions of the Hide & Seek series continue to go gangbusters and now it’s Perth’s turn to reveal its hidden secrets.

Whether you’re looking for a stocking stuffer or a birthday present, Hide & Seek Perth makes the perfect gift. But make sure you grab a couple of copies for yourself, otherwise you’ll be sharing it with all your friends as you compete to come up with the best suggestion for a new brunch spot or a place for Saturday night drinks.

Hide & Seek Perth is $14.95 (paperback) and available at all good bookstores and selected newsagencies.

Hide & Seek books are also available for Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

This darling of the decks, dubbed Australia’s No.1 female DJ, has reached dizzying new heights receiving two ARIA nominations and smashing the charts with her Crave compilations. Touring, recording and living it up in LA, DJ Havana Brown’s unprecedented popularity in the States has translated into a much sought-after 12 month residency at Paris Las Vegas’ Chateau nightclub spinning for all the superstars.

Strassman’s latest tour includes Perth Regal Theatre and regional Western Australia. Tickets ARE NOW ON SALE.

Strassman’s new show truly ventures down the rabbit hole. Alternate realities? Parallel universes? It’s a mind-bending journey into a world where nothing is as it seems. Chuck and Ted E. Bare are back but a strange ‘wish” transforms them into comical alternate selves, taking over Strassman’s mind. The road home may be scary for Strassman…but hilarious for audiences!

Strassman returns to Australia after a hit season at the 2010 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Working with leading American theatre writer and director Steve Altman, he created the dark psychological comedy DUALITY. The show was a sensation in Edinburgh, with The Mirror giving it 5 stars, calling it “A fabulous achievement…is mind blowing”. Chortle.co.uk called it “supremely clever… faultlessly performed”. The List said “Absolute genius. The writing is truly superb and the performance – or should that be performances? – breath-taking in linguistic and ventriloquistic dexterity. Takes the ancient art of ventriloquism up several notches.”

Back in Australia, comedy returns to the forefront of Strassman’s show. Considered by many to be one of the best ventriloquists in the world, his shows are hilariously funny and razor sharp, featuring full stage production complete with dazzling sets and state-of-the-art theatrical effects. His shows involve multiple characters and high-tech puppetronics (robotics) that bring his characters to life, even when he has left the stage.

Embraced in Australia since his early performances in the 1990s, his numerous television appearances and his own show on Channel 9, Strassman is now hoping to keep Chuck Wood in control.
The show will be presented under the trademark blue-and-yellow Grand Chapiteau (big top), located at Langley Park. Perth will be the last stop on the Australian tour which commences in Brisbane
in July this year.

Since its world premiere in Montreal, Canada in April 2009, OVO has visited more than 15 cities in Canada, United States and Mexico, delighting over 2 million spectators. The Australian tour will be the first time OVO has toured outside North America.

Starting February 8 2012, advance online tickets for OVO will be available exclusively for Cirque Club members. Cirque Club membership is free and registration is quick and simple. Member benefits include advance tickets, special offers and insider information on the world of Cirque du Soleil. To join go to www.cirqueclub.com

Tickets for OVO will be on sale to the general public on Monday February 20 2012 at cirquedusoleil.com/ovo

About the show

OVO, meaning “egg” in Portuguese, is a headlong rush into a colorful ecosystem teeming with life, where insects work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love in a non-stop riot of energy and movement.

When a mysterious egg appears in their midst, the insects are awestruck and intensely curious about this iconic object that represents the enigma and cycles of their lives. It is love at first sight when a gawky, quirky insect arrives in this bustling community and a fabulous ladybug catches his eye – and the feeling is mutual.

The cast of OVO is comprised of 55 performing artists from 14 countries specializing in many acrobatic acts. One highlight of OVO is the stunning Flying Act in which a group of scarabs soar high above the stage, from both edges to the middle landing on a platform. This breathtaking act combines many circus disciplines: banquine, Russian swing and swinging chair

Cirque du Soleil

From a group of 20 street performers at its beginnings in 1984, Cirque du Soleil is a major Québec-based organization providing high-quality artistic entertainment. The company has 5,000 employees, including more than 1,300 artists from more than 50 different countries.

Cirque du Soleil has brought wonder and delight to more than 100 million spectators in 300 cities in over forty countries on six continents. Cirque du Soleil International Headquarters are in Montreal, Canada.
