Villa – Stirling Street, Perth

Take note Gen Y – this is how it’s done. Roger Sanchez.

At some stage in your nightclub life, you have been branded by the mark of ‘The S Man’.

One of history’s (and the planet’s) foremost House DJs, Roger Sanchez has the ‘touch’; the art of knowing how to make people feel…right. Coming outta Queens, NY, as a professional breakdancer, Roger Sanchez had immediate street cred. Those streets surrounded him with the sounds he would use for his production and DJ career: salsa, blues, soul, disco, rock, hip hop – he has it all. In 1990, he was catapulted into internationaldom with ‘Luv Dancin’ (as Underground Station). Then came the biggun: ‘Release Yourself’ – what started out as a tune became a clubbing concept, CD mix series, IDMA winning podcast show, annual residency in Ibiza for over a decade. Such is the power of Sanchez.

And then there’s ‘Another Chance’, no doubt his most successful hit accompanied with the iconic film clip: a girl walking the street with a gigantic love heart. Yeah, you know the one.

Since forming his opus label Stealth Records in 2002, the recognition has continued to roll in. In one week alone Roger scored a trio of tracks in the top 25 Billboard Charts and won a Grammy in 2004. Roger’s love of connecting with a crowd ensures he keeps his status as a true citizen of the World. The Sanch is still soaring at the top of his game, spanning three decades on a meteoric journey from underground cult figure to master of the global club stage.

Villa – Stirling St Perth

When their third album From Here To Anywhere was released late last year, it set ears on fire around the globe and first singles We Love (since certified Gold) and Big took up residency at the top end of the club chart.

Now, in their first tour since the album’s release, Sneaky Sound System’s Miss Connie and Black Angus are set to take their already legendary banging club show on the road, adding extra surprises, production and mischief to deliver one hell of night. Miss it at your peril!

The dates mark Sneaky’s return to Australia from shows in Asia and the US, and are their last local shows before the duo spend a fourth consecutive northern summer in the UK and Europe, and after that relocating to the US for an indefinite period. Meantime Really Want To See You Again, the electric third single from the album, will be released Friday 9 March with a collection of top-notch remixes including Funkagenda, KiNK, Azari & III and Jam Xpress.

The video, a modern twist on raw 90s production, was shot earlier this month in icy London and hits screens February 28.

Looking ahead expect collaborations from Sneaky Sound System with Erick Morillo, Funkagenda, Aeroplane, Riton and Hook & Sling, add to that Foxtel’s use of Big in their massive Olympics campaign, an appearance at Sydney’s Mardi Gras and Adelaide’s Clipsal 500, a quick trip to Kuala Lumpur for Future Music’s inaugural festival there, and things are indeed shaping up to take Black Angus and Miss Connie From Here To Anywhere.

Saturday 7th April
Villa, Stirling St Perth

In three years, Villa has bought you killer sold-out shows: the Stanton Warriors, Fake Blood, Krafty Kuts, Plump DJs, Kaskade, Steve Aoki, Kele Okereke, and so, SO many more!

Three stylin’ years as Perth’s best new venue means we needed to bring you the biggest act we could to celebrate; THE FREESTYLERS. One of the original Finger Lickin’ crew, The Freestylers are dancefloor sensations and they’re about to birthday-body-pop their Villa cherry.

Let’s just stop and think about the Freestylers for a moment. These sounds are a fast moving, electro-rocking monster movie that is going to hit your house like a tidal wave. Case-in-point: ‘Push Up’. They created it. Built it. Produced it. They MADE it. That tune is the definition of an anthem. And who do you think Pendulum has to thank for ‘Painkiller’ and ‘Fasten Your Seatbelts’? The Freestylers.

Over 15 years at the top. Acclaimed albums. Some of the best tunes in our scene. Oh yeah; the Freestylers have still got it. Whether they travel with a band, a vocalist, an MC or none of the above, you can bet on this: the nucleus of the ‘stylers has always been Matt Cantor and Aston Harvey – and they are the winning combination. With rafts of dancefloor weapons and a certified popchart hit in their ammo, expect to be absolutely slaughtered at our third birthday as Villa turns into a bass-laden broken beat battlefield.

Did someone say ‘Raw As F*ck’? Why yes. We did. Prepare yourselves for some ‘Adventures in Freestyle’. Don’t hold back.

If you’ve experienced a Freestylers set, it’s OK, we’ve got goosebumps too. If you haven’t…what are you waiting for?

MARTEN HØRGER
There is simply no better candidate to support the Freestylers than Marten Hørger. The German gent has more than just the funky letter in his name to earn your attention – he’s the beeps and bass hero of the Stanton Warriors, Plump DJs and Sir Krafty Kuts (we know, they told us).

Kickstarting his career in an underground venue in south Germany at the age of 15 (only in Germany, right?), Marten developed his own sound of breakbeat, electro, dubstep and hip hop. He calls it his ‘I don’t give a f*ck’ blend (otherwise referred to as ‘I play for the people’ blend. Seriously). The sound is extremely apparent in his 2006 duo Boogie Army, who gave us 2007’s biggest breakbeat anthem, ‘Sex, Drugs, Rock ‘n Roll’. He followed that up with SMASH HIFI, a project with Leeroy Thornhill (The Prodigy) and they popped out ‘Everything You Need’ and, most recently, ’15 Hundred Dollars/Take You Back’ – a tune already part of every breakbeat DJs set. But here’s what endears us the most to Marten Hørger – he runs Stamina Club, one of Europe’s longest running monthly breakbeat nights.

They just celebrated their 10th Anniversary…sound familiar?

Saturday 7 April 2012
Ambar – 104 Murray Street, Perth

These sounds are set to fall into your mind at Perth’s #1 regular night, Japan 4.

A little bit-electro, a little bit-live, a lotta Bitrok: this Brisbane-bred Sydney-based DJ production duo are our guests this week.

They’ve just released their hugely anticipated 10-track self-titled debut on Creative Vibes and it’s causing more than a little bit-HYPE.

It features the voice of John Mackay, N’fa, Rupert Keiller (Sonic Animation) and the final midas touch from Scott Horscroft (The Presets, Silverchair) and Mike Marsh (Chemical Brothers, Massive Attack) Bitrok certainly brings out the big guns.

Ain’t no doubt Ryan Dickinson and Ollie Bowler shake off the confines of their club-oriented past and deliver sounds which punch in just the right places for a Home of the Underground dancefloor.

Bitrok – genre-crossing genius on a course set for the stars.

The crew on the one’s and two’s has been hand-picked to ensure you get the best of what Japan 4 is all about: the right tunes + the right ‘tude = the perfect night.
