You won’t believe your eyes! You’ll think your ears are playing tricks on you! Your feet better not fail you now! Presenting the all audio, all visual feast for your freakin’ senses: The Wonderful World of DJ Yoda.

Yoda ain’t just a DJ, yo. He’s like the culture collector you always wanted to be and the exhibitor you never could be for every style of music and entertainment you can wrap your head around. Applying his ridiculously astute ear for mixing and blending 12” a capellas on top of seemingly disparate genres, DJ Yoda will take you on a tour from underground rap to TV themes, nursery rhymes, country, soul, reggae, drum ‘n bass and 80s pop – and then add in the visual element.

DJ Yoda quickly joined the ranks of genre-bending DJs like Z-Trip and 2manyDJs who both technically and creatively transformed the landscape of club culture with their ferocious mixing style that eventually became known as ‘mashup.’ Yoda began to incorporate visuals into his set until he came up with the most fully-realised vision of what club music and the greatest collection of cult footage could be. Think Count and Sinden’s ‘Beeper’ vs ‘The Big Lebowski’s beeper and you’re not even close.

It’s like DJ Yoda is taking you on a date to the movies and the club at the same time.

The Bakery – James Street, Northbridge

With special guests Injured Ninja, Mathas, Ourobonic Plague, Sleepyhead and Mr Starks.

Who needs a central idea when you can do it all. A great album statement? No. Track-for-track the birth of a new legend? Absolutely.
- The Quietus

Saturday, January 21 will see Sacramento trio Death Grips shatter preconceptions about what hip hop can be, as they take to the Bakery. The band simply redefines the genre, blending it with brutal noise and aggression until it’s almost unrecognisable. This is more than mere genre-tweaking, this is complete genre-deconstruction.

After forming in late 2010, Death Grips generated enormous buzz before releasing Ex-Military, a mixtape described by NBC New York as “unlike anything you’ve ever heard”. The album, available to stream from the band’s SoundCloud (http://soundcloud.com/deathgrips) is, quite simply, a game changer.

Live, you can expect to see MC Ride pacing the stage, tattooed, shirtless, spitting pure doom. Expect to see the amazing Zach Hill (Hella) brutally pound his kit with more intensity than you’ve ever imagined. Expect to see Flatlander, aka Andy Morin on electronics, bringing that sonic mess into something resembling a cohesive whole. Expect harsh, aggressive, unrelenting chaos.

There’s simply no adequate way that words can describe what the band sound like – there is literally nobody else doing anything close to what Death Grips are doing.

Support comes from the very noisy Injured Ninja, the razor-sharp Mathas, the doom-laden Ourobonic Plague plus spit in your face beat wizardry from Mr Starks & Sleepyhead

Tickets on sale soon from http://lifeisnoise.com/, Now Baking, Heatseeker, 78 Records, Mills and Planet for $29+bf.

This January sees Mercury Prize winner PJ Harvey make a welcome and highly anticipated return to Australia for a series of theatre performances to showcase her newest, and most critically acclaimed album, Let England Shake.

The themes on the album return, time and again, to the matter of war, the fate of the people who must do the fighting, and events separated by whole ages, from Afghanistan to Gallipoli. The album they make up is not a work of protest, nor of strait-laced social or political comment. It brims with the mystery and magnetism in which Harvey excels. Of the album The Guardian wrote “She remains one of the most thrilling and relevant musicians working today…A melodious, beautiful album, passionate and rich and alive.” Whilst The Financial Times commented that “‘Let England Shake’ is the most powerful work yet by any British artist about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

Harvey was crowned the Barclaycard Mercury Prize recipient for a record-breaking second time – she is the first artist ever to achieve this remarkable double victory. The prize for Let England Shake came a decade after Harvey’s inaugural win for her fifth album Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea.  The Evening Standard commented on the win “Let England Shake is a masterpiece…Harvey saw the big picture. She deserved the big prize.”

The Australian shows will feature songs from the new album alongside songs from previous albums.  Harvey will be accompanied by a band which comprises of Mick Harvey, John Parish & Jean Marc Butty.

Tickets will be in high demand, please note the vital ticketing dates below to avoid disappointment.

Previous experience has proved that the only way to kick off the new year is with a stellar soiree by the sea. Limelite and Sunset Events proudly announce the return of their signature New Years Day bash, Club Paradiso – back and bigger than ever. Club Paradiso returns on Sunday, January 1st to Salt on The Beach (subject to Council Approval) and is set to be the party seasons premier boutique dance event.

Having built up a s…olid reputation for providing Perth crowds with quality acts to ring in the new year including the likes of Fedde Le Grand, Sebastian Ingrosso, Dirty South and Digitalism. Club Paradiso’s fourth New Years Day outing is set to continue in fine form with international superstars THE SHAPESHIFTERS (UK) and WYNTER GORDON (USA) set to headline the day.

Purveyors of the finest house music and all round party people, The Shapeshifters are leaving the harsh London winter for our sunny shores. Their smash hit “Lola’s Theme” set the precedent for the duo: forget genres. The boys have vastly different backgrounds, funk/soul vs. techno. It’s this fusion that makes The Shapeshifters sound so dynamic and exciting. DJs, producers and label owners, they’ve set the pace with their unique kind of nocturnal grooves, and there’s no sign of it slowing down with the forthcoming release of their ‘Nikki Beach – In The House’ compilation for Defected Records.

Songbird of the moment Wynter Gordon is set to enthral you with her blissful vocals. From enchanting crowds at clubs and festivals around the world, to her chart toppers “Toyfriend” and “Dirty Talk”, she’s collaborated with the likes of David Guetta and rubbed shoulders with all of Hollywood’s A-list. Dubbed “the voice of all things smokin’ on the airwaves”, she is one to watch so don’t miss out.

The room we like to call the Big Chill will be held hostage by the Lucid Dreaming DJ’s. Escape the heat for a dose of techno, tech and more underground electronic sounds.

As always, Club Paradiso boasts a premium collection of local talent including: Mind Electric, Zelimir, Jus Haus?, M.J.Bannister, KNO Agents, Chris Chiari, Rob Sharp, Aarin Fraser, Kid Deep, Cam Duff, Marko La Kucha, El Dario, Makitan, Nathan Francis, Richard Lee, Suric and Milanov, set to sooth your beat hungry bones across two stages.

The day will start at 2pm with tunes in both the big top beach bar and the air-conditioned restaurant. Complimentary finger food will be ushered around the venue from 3pm – 7pm and a full menu option available for something more substantial.

Don’t miss all the fun in the sun … minus the sand as we bring in 2012.

Big Apachee, Brag Beat and Rave Presents the Vengaboys!

It’s time to dust off that tatty old party pass because the Vengabus is due at any minute. And God forbid you miss it. 90s European chart toppers, the Vengaboys, are heading to Australia this summer with a brand new album, rather gloriously entitled ‘Rocket To Your Uranus’.

The new album marks a sparkling return to form for the party-centric foursome. Back after a brief hiatus with their tongues firmly in cheek and doing what they do best.

The Vengaboys are probably best remembered for a string of Euro- flavoured party anthems originally released back in the mid-1990s, most notably ‘Boom Boom Boom’ and ‘We’re Going To Ibiza’. They not only dominated the pop charts but permeated dance floors across the globe, from weddings to nightclubs and pretty much any social/embarrassing occasion you can think of.

The group are set to cause similar destruction this year, following up their album with a tasty XXX remix of ‘Parada de Tettas’ and a recent sell out show in Eindhoven. Fans of the Vengaboys can watch the fun unfold simply by taking a look at their rather entertaining twitter feed. The joys of the digital age.

The Vengaboys will make their way to Australian shores in January 2012. Tickets go on sale, Monday, September 5 from www.bigtix.com.au or direct from the venues.
